Research Interests

Axel Kallies is a Professor for Molecular Immunology at the Universities of Melbourne, Australia and Bonn, Germany. The majority of his time he spends in Melbourne. He and his team study the molecular control of CD8 T cell and regulatory T cell (Treg) differentiation. They published key studies in leading journals of the field, including Nature, Science, Immunity and Nature Immunology, which detail the roles of molecular regulators of T cell differentiation and function. Over the last few years, the Kallies lab has developed a focus on T cells in responses to chronic infection and cancer. This has resulted in the discovery of stem-like precursors of exhausted T cells that maintain antigen-specific T cell responses long term and mediate PD-1 checkpoint inhibitor therapy.
